You bought a replacement key fob online for $30 and now you need to program it. Can you do it yourself at home? The honest answer: maybe, but probably not. It depends entirely on the make, model, and year of your vehicle. Some manufacturers built in a self-programming procedure. Most didn't.
Cars that sometimes allow DIY fob programming include certain Ford, GM, and Mazda models from the mid-2000s to early 2010s. The process usually involves a sequence like: turn key to ON, press lock button, turn key off, repeat several times within a specific time window. Your owner's manual might have the procedure. If it works, you'll hear the locks cycle to confirm programming. It's free and takes five minutes.
The catch: most modern vehicles — especially anything with push-to-start, and pretty much every Toyota, Honda, Nissan, BMW, Mercedes, or Hyundai — require dealer-level OBD-II programming equipment. The car's computer needs to register the new fob's unique ID, and there's no DIY bypass for that. The security systems are specifically designed to prevent unauthorized key programming.

Dealerships charge $150-400 just for the programming, and that's on top of the key cost. They also tend to insist you buy their OEM fob at full markup. Some will flat out refuse to program an aftermarket fob, even though the equipment can do it. It's a profit thing, not a technical limitation.
A locksmith is your middle-ground option. At Locksmith Auto, transponder key and fob programming starts from $90, and we can program most aftermarket fobs as long as they're compatible with your vehicle. We carry the same OBD-II programming tools the dealers use. We come to you, so no towing or waiting at the service department.
One more thing: don't confuse fob programming with key cutting. If your new fob also has a physical key blade (for the door lock or emergency start), that blade needs to be cut to match your car. A blank fob from Amazon won't have that. We cut and program in one visit. Check out our key fob replacement page for pricing by vehicle brand.
