Car Key Stuck in Ignition — What to Do (and What NOT to Do)

Car key stuck in ignition — hand trying to turn it — Locksmith Auto

You parked the car, turned it off, and now the key won't come out. You're pulling, wiggling, and nothing. Before you rip the key off in the ignition (yes, that happens), take a breath. There are a few common reasons this happens, and some of them have really easy fixes.

The most common cause is the steering wheel lock. When you turn off the car and the wheel shifts slightly, it engages the steering lock, which also locks the key in place. Fix: gently turn the steering wheel left and right while pulling the key out. You'll feel a click and the key slides right out. This catches people off guard all the time.

Dead battery is another one. Some cars need a small amount of electrical power to release the key from the ignition. If your battery died while you were parked, the key gets trapped. Jump the battery and the key should release. Also check that the car is fully in Park — if the transmission didn't click into P all the way, the key stays locked.

If none of that works, the ignition cylinder itself is probably worn out. Over years of use, the wafers inside the cylinder get rounded down. The key goes in fine but can't rotate back to the full release position. You might see people suggest spraying WD-40 in there. Don't. WD-40 attracts dust and gums things up worse over time. Use dry graphite lubricant if you want to try something, but a worn cylinder usually needs ignition repair or replacement.

Do not do any of this: don't force the key. A snapped key inside the ignition is ten times worse than a stuck one. Don't try to disassemble the steering column yourself unless you know what you're doing — there are airbag components in there. And don't leave the key in the ignition overnight in a parking lot for obvious reasons.

At Locksmith Auto, ignition repair starts from $250 and we come to your location. If the cylinder needs replacing, we handle the full swap and reprogram your keys on the spot. Takes about an hour for most vehicles. If you want to understand more about how your car key communicates with the ignition, check out our transponder key guide.
