Locked Out of Your Bedroom? 4 Ways to Open It

Bedroom doors use privacy locks, not security locks. That's good news for you. They're designed to keep people out temporarily, not permanently. Most have a built-in emergency release that you can trigger from the outside with the right tool. Four methods that work.

Method 1: The pin hole trick. Look at the outside of the doorknob. See a small hole in the center? That's the emergency release. Straighten a bobby pin, grab a thin nail, or use the little tool that came with the knob (nobody keeps those). Push it straight into the hole and press. For push-button locks, you'll feel it click and the door unlocks. For turn-button locks, you need a flathead tool — insert and twist.

Method 2: Credit card shimmy. This only works on spring-latch locks (not deadbolts). Slide a stiff card between the door and the frame where the latch is. Angle it toward the latch and push while wiggling. The card pushes the angled latch back into the door. Use a card you don't care about — it might get scratched up. Gift cards or hotel key cards work best.

Method 3: Remove the hinges. If the hinges are on your side of the door, pop the hinge pins out with a flathead screwdriver and a hammer. Tap the pin from below, pull it out, and the door lifts right off. Put the pins back when you're done. Takes about two minutes.
