How to Change Your Safe Combination (Sentry, Winchester, Master Lock)

Whether you bought a used safe, inherited one, or just want to reset the code after a breakup or employee change, changing the combination is something you should do. The process is different for electronic and mechanical safes, and it varies by brand.
For Sentry Safe electronic models: open the safe with your current code, look for a small reset button on the inside of the door (usually near the battery compartment). Press and hold it until you hear a beep, then enter your new 4-8 digit code and press the lock button. Test it three times before closing the door. If you don't have the current code, you'll need the factory key that came with the safe or a locksmith.
Winchester gun safes typically require you to enter the current code, then press the reset or program button inside the door, enter the new code twice, and confirm. Master Lock safes vary widely — some use a reset tool that came in the box, others need you to hold the reset lever inside the door while entering the new combo. Always check the model number on the back and look up the exact instructions for your unit.

Mechanical dial safes are a different story. Changing the combination on a dial safe requires opening the back of the lock mechanism and physically swapping the wheel pack or adjusting the change key. This is not a DIY job. One wrong move and you can lock yourself out permanently. Call a safe locksmith for mechanical combination changes.
Forgot your combination entirely? Don't start drilling. Most electronic safes have a master override key or a reset procedure through the manufacturer. Sentry Safe will send you a recovery code if you provide proof of purchase and the serial number. If none of that works, a locksmith can open it without destroying the safe. At Locksmith Auto, safe lockout service starts from $95.
Pro tip: write down your new combination and store it somewhere separate from the safe. A sealed envelope in a bank safe deposit box, with a trusted family member, or in a password manager. The number one reason people call us about safes isn't break-ins — it's forgotten codes.
