Why keys break. Worn keys that have been copied too many times get thinner and weaker. Cheap hardware-store duplicates use softer metal that snaps under torque. Forcing a key in a stiff lock puts stress on the blade until it gives. Cold weather makes metal more brittle. What not to do before we arrive. Do not push the broken key further into the cylinder. Do not try to pull it out with pliers or tweezers — you will likely push it deeper or damage the pins. Do not spray WD-40 or any liquid in there. Do not try the superglue trick you saw online. It does not work and it gums up the cylinder. Just leave the broken piece where it is and call us.

The extractor slides in alongside the broken piece, hooks onto the key serrations, and pulls it straight out. Most extractions take 10-20 minutes. The lock cylinder stays undamaged in the majority of cases.
When the lock needs replacing after extraction. If the key broke because the cylinder is worn, corroded, or damaged internally, extraction alone does not fix the underlying problem. We inspect the cylinder after pulling the broken piece and let you know whether it is still functional or needs a swap. If it needs replacing, we do it right there. No second trip.
