Motorcycle keys are simpler than car keys most of the time, but they've got their own headaches. Most bikes use a flat or tubular key that runs the ignition, fork lock, seat lock, and sometimes a helmet lock. Lose your only key and you're not riding anywhere. Getting the bike to a dealer means paying for a trailer or flatbed, which is money on top of money.

Three categories of motorcycle keys. Standard mechanical keys ($75-100) have no electronics. We cut them by code or impression. Transponder-equipped keys ($120-180) show up on newer Honda, Yamaha, and BMW bikes and need chip programming on top of the cutting. HISS keys from Honda and YCC keys from Yamaha fall in that range. Proximity fobs for bikes like the Ducati Multistrada or BMW R-series run $150-250.

We carry a mobile key cutting machine with motorcycle-specific blanks. For standard mechanical keys, we cut a new one in under 10 minutes using the key code stamped on your ignition cylinder or pulled from your VIN. For transponder motorcycle keys, we bring the same diagnostic gear we use for cars.

Harley owners, listen up. Pre-2012 Harleys use a round barrel key. Duplicating one costs $75-90. 2012 and newer models with the factory security system use a coded FOB that runs $120-160 to replace and program. That FOB syncs through a specific learn procedure where you turn the ignition through a timed sequence.

Get a spare made while your original still works. A duplicate from a working key costs $75-100. If you lose your only key, we have to decode the lock cylinder first, and that bumps the price to $120-200. Stash the spare somewhere other than on the bike. Jacket pocket, wallet, or at home.
