Smart keys are different from regular transponder keys. A transponder key has a chip that talks to the car when you put it in the ignition. A smart key never goes into a slot at all. It stays in your pocket. You walk up, grab the door handle, and the car unlocks. Press the start button and the engine fires. The key fob and the car maintain a constant encrypted radio handshake at close range.

This encrypted communication is why smart keys cost more than basic transponder keys. The chip inside is more advanced, the programming takes longer, and the security protocols are tighter.
