An electric strike replaces the standard strike plate in your door frame. When triggered by a buzzer, card reader, keypad, or remote button, the strike pivots open and the door pushes open without turning the handle. The existing mechanical lock stays in place and still works with a key. You get electronic control without ripping out your current hardware.

That is the big advantage over maglocks. You keep your deadbolt or latch for key access, add the electric strike for electronic access, and now the door handles both. Apartment buildings use them for lobby buzzers. Offices use them with card readers. Retail stores use them to let staff buzz customers through a locked front door.

Electric strikes work with cylindrical locks, mortise locks, and rim exit devices. Fail-safe models unlock during power failure for fire egress. Fail-secure models stay locked when power drops. Most exterior egress doors need fail-safe by fire code. Interior security doors can use either configuration depending on what you are protecting.
