Different cabinets, different locks. Vertical filing cabinets usually have a plunger lock on the top drawer. When it's locked, a metal bar runs down the side and blocks all the drawers. Lateral cabinets use a similar setup or individual drawer locks. Desks use cam locks or pin tumbler cylinders in the center drawer or pedestal. Each type needs a different approach to open, rekey, or replace.
