Maglocks use a powerful electromagnet mounted on the door frame and a steel armature plate on the door. When energized, the magnet holds the door shut with 600 to 1,200 pounds of force. No mechanical parts to pick, no keyhole to drill, no latch to bypass. This is the backbone of modern commercial access control.

Two configurations. Fail-safe maglocks release when power cuts out — the door unlocks automatically during a power failure or fire alarm. Fire code requires fail-safe on every egress door. Fail-secure maglocks stay locked during power loss, used on vault doors, server rooms, and evidence storage where keeping the door locked is the priority.

Maglocks pair with card readers, PIN keypads, key fob systems, biometric scanners, and intercom-based buzzers. The access control system tells the maglock when to release. You can set schedules, restrict access by time of day, log every entry, and revoke credentials remotely. That level of control is not possible with a mechanical lock and a pile of keys.
